Working At Heights

 A favorite among our clients, come and see why our program is held in regard as one of the best available by our peers, our colleagues and the construction industry! This course is offered at CWST facilities or offsite at the client location. Please note that as of April 1, 2024, any offsite training at the client location will require the client to provide an extension or portable ladder to review as part of the new content on ladders. 

Minimum class sizes are 5 participants, and in the event enrollment minimums aren't achieved, the next available dates will be offered to clients. Maximum class sizes are 12 learners as per the Ontario Working at Heights Standard. 

This course is a pre-requisite for our elevated work platformsuspended access user & installer, and scaffolding courses!

 "New User" full courses are 8 hours for $160pp  | Half Day "Refresher" courses are 4 hours for $110pp

No Harness? No problem! We have you covered. In the event that you're taking a refresher course, we recommend you bring your own harness so we can help ensure you're fitted properly and it's in good condition!

Certification is valid for three years from date of issue.

Courses & Length

Full Courses are recommended to people who haven’t been working at heights in the past few years or who are new to the trades. Full courses run every Tuesday from 8AM to approximately 4PM and available at your location or ours at 41King Street in Barrie. 

Refresher Courses are recommended to people who have already received training from a CPO accredited provider. In order to register for a refresher course with us, we will need proof of training from your previous provider. Your learner number provider through Skillspass is ideal. The courses will be available every Thursday your choice, either morning session from 8AM to 12PM or the afternoon session that begins at 1230 and ends approximately 430PM.

Upon successful completion of this course, the learner will:

  • Be familiar with legislation when working at heights is required to be used on site
  • Describe the circumstances where fall protection is required including ladders and access equipment
  • Describe the relevance of guardrails, floor coverings
  • Understand and select appropriate fall protection systems travel restraint, fall restrict, fall arrest, and safety nets, rope systems and rope limitations
  • Correctly identify and inspect the components within a fall protection system including 3 anchor types, 6 classes of body harnesses and connectors (lanyards)
  • Understand how to determine limitations and differences between vertical and horizontal lifeline systems 
  • Identify the physics of a fall and how to calculate fall distance to avoid "bottoming out"
  • Identify elements of a rescue plan to diminish the casualties from a fall event 
  • Demonstrate their understanding through a theory evaluation
  • Demonstrate their practical skill through harness and full system inspection through 100% tie off
